How Google AI Overviews works — and what to do to show up in it
Google AI Overviews appears in billions of searches. Understand how it decides what to show, why it's different from ChatGPT, and what your company can do to show up.

In May 2024, Google launched AI Overviews — an AI-generated answer box that appears at the top of search results for a growing selection of queries. Unlike ChatGPT or Gemini (which are standalone chat interfaces), AI Overviews lives inside the Google results page — between the user who searches and the traditional links that were always there.
That position matters. AI Overviews is the first thing most users see when they run a Google search. It appears above the first organic result, above the ads in many cases, and summarizes an answer with references to specific sources. For the pages cited, a visible link appears with potential traffic. For anyone not cited, the risk is the opposite: the user reads the generated answer and never reaches the organic links.
Google's three zones in 2026 — and where AI Overviews fits
To understand AI Overviews, it helps to picture the Google results page as three distinct zones, each with its own logic:
Zone 1 — Ads (Google Ads). They appear at the top and sometimes at the bottom of the page. Bought at auction by keyword. There's no relationship between being an advertiser and showing up in AI Overviews — Google has made that explicit. Ad spend doesn't buy a spot in AI Overviews.
Zone 2 — AI Overviews. Appears just below the ads (when it's triggered for that query). It's AI-generated based on the sources Google considers most relevant and trustworthy for the question. The sources are cited with a link. It isn't bought — it's earned with content authority.
Zone 3 — Traditional organic results. The links that have always existed. They still appear below AI Overviews. For queries where AI Overviews shows up, organic position 1 is now effectively position 4 or 5 on the visible screen.
That has a clear strategic implication: for queries where AI Overviews shows up frequently (questions, comparisons, explanations), investing in content that can be cited in it has a growing return — because it's the only way to appear "above" organic position 1 without paying for an ad.
What Google AI Overviews cites — and how it decides
AI Overviews doesn't work like ChatGPT. It's built on Google's indexing infrastructure — which means it only cites pages Google has already indexed and for which it has established quality signals. A post published yesterday rarely shows up in AI Overviews tomorrow, because Google has no performance history for that page.
The citation patterns that show up most in the available data:
Pages that already rank well organically. This is the strongest correlation: pages that appear in Google's positions 1–10 for that query are far more likely to be cited in AI Overviews than pages that don't rank. That doesn't mean you need to be in first place — but it means traditional SEO is still a prerequisite for visibility in AI Overviews.
Content in a direct-answer format. AI Overviews extracts text snippets that directly answer the user's question. Pages with opening paragraphs that get straight to the point ("The standard return window for online purchases is 30 days at most major retailers, though some extend it to 90") are cited more than pages that reach the answer after three paragraphs of context.
Schema.org FAQ markup. Pages with FAQPage schema are more likely to appear in AI Overviews — especially for direct-question queries. Structured markup helps Google identify which parts of the page are the answer to which question.
High-domain-authority sites. For competitive queries, AI Overviews tends to cite high-authority domains — even when that page's specific content isn't the best available. That favors established sites and creates a barrier for new sites in competitive niches.
The difference between AI Overviews and Featured Snippets — and why it matters
Before AI Overviews, Google had Featured Snippets — answer boxes extracted directly from a single page, with a link. Many people confuse the two, but there are differences that affect strategy:
The Featured Snippet cites a single source and extracts the text with virtually no modification. AI Overviews synthesizes multiple sources and can cite 3 to 8 different pages in the same answer. To appear in a Featured Snippet, you had to be the single best answer to that question. To appear in AI Overviews, you need to be one of the best sources within a set — which opens up more possibilities.
Another difference: the Featured Snippet was usually the only result that appeared in the "answer box." AI Overviews coexists with organic results — and the pages cited in it can also appear in the organic results below. That means a well-positioned page can appear twice on the same results page: cited in AI Overviews and in the organic result.
The CTR paradox: does AI Overviews increase or decrease clicks?
Early data on AI Overviews' impact on organic traffic showed CTR drops for some queries — because the user reads the generated answer and doesn't click the links. That sparked a debate in the SEO world about whether optimizing for AI Overviews is self-sabotage.
The most current evidence suggests an important distinction by query type:
For simple informational queries ("what is X," "how does Y work"), the user often satisfies the intent with the AI Overviews answer without clicking. Here, showing up in AI Overviews helps with brand building but doesn't necessarily generate a click.
For decision or deep-research queries ("what's the best X for Y situation," "how to choose between A and B"), the user treats AI Overviews as a starting point and clicks the links to go deeper. Here, being cited generates qualified traffic.
The practical conclusion: optimizing for AI Overviews on decision queries is strategic. On purely informational queries, the benefit is branding, not direct traffic.
How Crowly connects to Google AI Overviews
Crowly monitors visibility in the conversational generative AIs — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude. Google AI Overviews is a different layer (it lives inside Google Search, not a standalone conversational AI), but there's clear overlap: the sources Google AI Overviews cites frequently also tend to show up in Gemini when users ask the same questions outside Google.
That means the content strategy that improves your Gemini score (monitored by Crowly) frequently also improves your presence in AI Overviews. The investment has a double return.

Three high-impact actions to show up in Google AI Overviews
1. Optimize the first sentences of each page for a direct answer. AI Overviews extracts the first paragraphs most often. If your page starts with context and reaches the answer later, you're losing citations. Lead with the answer.
2. Implement Schema.org FAQPage on your frequently-asked-questions pages. For question queries, that markup significantly increases the probability of citation in AI Overviews.
3. Strengthen the organic SEO of your most relevant pages. There's no shortcut: AI Overviews cites pages that already rank well far more often. Before thinking about AI Overviews, make sure your most important pages are in the top positions for the queries that matter.
