Topic clusters for AI visibility — how to build the topical authority AIs recognize

Publishing isolated posts doesn't build AI authority. Topic clusters — pillar content + interlinked satellite content — is the architecture that makes AIs recognize your brand as a reference on a topic.

A mind map connecting related topics

A company that publishes 20 posts on random topics and a company that publishes 20 posts on different aspects of the same central topic have the same content volume — but completely different impacts on AI visibility. The second company has topical authority. The first has a collection of texts with no coherence.

That distinction is critical because AIs, like modern search engines, are far better at recognizing topical authority than keyword authority. When the model perceives that a domain has deep, coherent content on a specific topic — a central article about the concept + supporting articles on specific aspects + interlinking between them — it treats that domain as a reference for that topic.

The topic-cluster model applied to AI

The topic-cluster concept was popularized by HubSpot for SEO in 2017 and remains the most efficient content architecture for building authority — both for Google and for generative AIs.

The structure has three layers:

Layer 1 — The pillar page (central content). A long, comprehensive article on the main topic, covering every relevant aspect in enough depth to be the definitive reference on that topic. Not an ordinary blog post — a resource page of 3,000 to 5,000 words that covers the topic end to end.

Layer 2 — Cluster content (satellite content). Specific articles on aspects, subtopics, or use cases of the central topic. Each satellite article goes deeper on an aspect the pillar page covers superficially — and links back to the pillar page.

Layer 3 — Deliberate interlinking. Every satellite article links to the pillar page. The pillar page links to each satellite article. That internal-link network creates the topical-authority graph AI systems recognize.

An example topic cluster for AI visibility

(An example of how a marketing company could structure this)

Pillar page: "The complete guide to AI visibility for companies — what GEO is and how it works"

Satellite content:

  • How ChatGPT decides which brands to cite in answers
  • How Perplexity uses Reddit as a citation source
  • How Gemini works for local searches
  • How to create content AIs extract and cite
  • How to measure AI visibility — metrics and tools
  • AI visibility for e-commerce — a specific strategy
  • AI visibility for B2B companies — how it works differently

Each satellite article has the pillar page as its central reference and links back to it. Together, they form a cluster that signals to the AIs: "this domain is a reference on AI visibility."

How to identify the right central topic for your cluster

The cluster's central topic needs to be broad enough to have multiple relevant subtopics, but specific enough that your company has real authority over it.

Practical test: list 10 subtopics of the topic. If all 10 make sense as individual articles your company is credentialed to write, the central topic is at the right level. If the 10 subtopics are all different (indicating the topic is too broad) or if it's hard to list 5 (indicating the topic is too narrow), adjust.

When to expand the cluster and when to create a new one

After building the initial cluster (pillar + 5-7 satellites), the choice between expanding the existing cluster or creating a new one should be based on data. If the existing cluster is generating AI visibility but there are relevant uncovered subtopics, expand. If there's a second, completely different strategic topic, create a new cluster.

Clusters aren't built in weeks — they're 3-6-month projects for the initial cluster to gain enough authority to show up consistently in AI answers.

How Crowly can help you measure topical authority

Crowly lets you track AI visibility for a set of queries related to a topic — which is equivalent to measuring a cluster's topical authority. As new satellite articles are published, the cluster's score evolves and shows the progress.
